Ridge Racer 7 for PS3 uses 5 GB of HDD space?!
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/742/742347p1.html
Holy crap! Assuming the PS3 comes with some preinstalled files, demos etc.,
5 GB is a good third of the usable space on the base model's HDD. It's not
even clear if this is voluntary or not, like the 4 GB install for Genji.
Is installing games to the HDD going to be the norm on the PS3 to compensate
for the Blu-ray drive's slow data transfer speed? I hope not.
Another interesting tidbit is that new music tracks for the game will cost
money to download. LOL, good luck. Why pay to download music from Sony's
store when you can just use your own music collection as the soundtrack?
(Wait, you can do that with the PS3, right? Stream music off your PC and
stuff?)

I've read elsewhere that it's a voluntary option. You either have the
horrendously long load times Blu Ray offers or you use up 5gb of space.
Certainly true to say that 60gb suddenly doesn't seem so generous though.

You know, Zackman, I do hate playing games off a disc. I wish the next Xbox
(the 720?) had a 100GB hard drive so I could install major game components
of my favorite games onto it as an option.

New tunes for the RR6 soundtrack have been for sale on Marketplace for
a long time. I think they're 20 points each or thereabout. I've always
liked the RR music so it's no skin off my nose to buy 'em.

Good thing they have a bigger hard drive, hey? Kinda like money/value
conversions from past to present... 100G on a PS3 is roughly equivelent of
20G on an XB360. :-)

How many points to a dollar? I really can't see spending more than a dime
for additional music tracks that are only usable within a game. If the
tracks were something more portable, say MP3, then I might pay a bit more
for them.
And so the nickle&diming begins.

$1=80 points if purchased via the console. Otherwise, factor in taxes.

It's not like Blu-ray is that slow. A 2x Blu Ray is like the equiavalent of
an 8x DVD or so (like 9 MB/s or so, but it's constant, not variable like a
DVD). It's just the hard drive will be a lot faster, period, like 30 MB/s.
And it is apparently voluntary. From what I've read, the PS3 can either use
a small automatic cache like the Xbox and 360, or the user can install
it(it's up to the software developer)

I think the "slow" comment is in reference to the drive on the 360, which
I believe is a 12x DVD drive? So, the PS3's optical drive is a little
slower than than the 360's. This could be one reason that all PS3s have a
hard drive.

The PS3's optical drive is a *lot* slower than the 360's drive. But as long
as this HDD install is optional, then it's no harm I guess. I plan to get
the 60 GB version, so a 5 GB install here and there won't kill me.

For real? I had no clue.

Remains to be seen if you'll be able to use that for cache, installs etc. I
somehow doubt it.

Me too. Although it would be nice. I've got a 100GB USB HD just sitting
around collecting dust and I'd have no problem dedicating it to my PS3
if it meant quicker load times vs. the Blu Ray.
But we'll see. Kutaragi did say the PS3 is a computer (I'll be holding
him to this quote for the rest of the PS3 lifespan, true or not). And
computers can accept outside USB drives.... so...

for cache... true. But all the other crap that I'll download can go on it.
Never have to worry about not being able to download the MGS4 demo! At least
that's what the guy said in the video. That you'll be able to attach a USB
harddrive. One can cross their fingers hoping that you can cache from it as
well. Otherwise I'll end up spending $150 more for a larger internal.

I know attaching it for extra space is possible. Its the caching that is
unknown.
I'm crossing my fingers.

Enjoy your 12 games then. Even less when you take into account the
system stuff which will be inevitably on the drive. I personally think
that a 5gb install is shocking.

Well the 360 is often (rightly) criticised for slow load times and it
has a 12x DVD drive in it. It's also worth noting that the seek times
for Blu-Ray are painfully slow.

One question.
Will doing this help with loading and the frame rate performance (slow down
/ stuttering) of the game?
The one thing that I don't care for with the 360 is games reading from the
disc and "I" feel it's the cause for the stuttering and frame drops. I have
no clue if that's why but I figure if the games used the cache or made
better use of the hard drive on the 360 this wouldn't happen as often as it
does.
I guess the real answer to this question might surface when Oblivion is
played on the PS3.
For that matter, when any cross platform title is displayed on the PS3.
Will the run better, the same, or worst?
